Resume Tips

Research by Mario Ortiz Solutions. We compiled 187 resume tips from published resume-writing guides, ranked them by how often the advice agreed, and these ten came out on top.

  1. Tailor your resume to each job you apply for — adjust your summary, skills, experience, and keywords to the specific posting.
  2. Quantify your achievements — use numbers, percentages, dollar figures, and scale.
  3. Lead with achievements and results — not job duties and responsibilities.
  4. Start every bullet point with a strong action verb — cut filler openers like "responsible for."
  5. Mirror the job posting's exact keywords and terminology — wherever they truthfully match your experience.
  6. Proofread meticulously — check spelling, grammar, and formatting — then have another person read it too.
  7. Keep your resume to one page — two pages maximum for experienced candidates.
  8. Use concise bullet points — instead of dense paragraphs.
  9. Put complete, accurate contact information at the top — name, phone, professional email, city — and double-check it.
  10. List experience in reverse-chronological order — most recent first.
